the nitty gritty rather pretty city

did anybody else read that as a kid? i adored it. anyway chicago is my love and my metaphor. earlier i was driving on lakeshore, and it was so foggy i couldn't see the buildings, just the trees and the road and the lake. i tweeted about taking the buildings on faith, and it occurred to me that that's a pretty good way of describing how i feel about faith in general. my life is driving down lakeshore; i know there are buildings past the trees, i know the lake doesn't end in a frosted glass dome just out of reach. sometimes i get glimpses that back me up, but mostly i walk by faith and not by sight.

those are my thoughts. i'm typing this on my blackberry while i wait for my friend to finish getting tattooed!
