psa: i can appreciate that people have different views from me. i do on a daily basis. i don't pretend to know everything. but i don't deal well with being told that without the incentive of money i would not do the job i want to do well. i am a health professional. i have been one on a volunteer basis since i was fourteen years old. if you think that i would do a shitty job as a doctor just because i couldn't get paid more to do better, you don't know me.

in other news, hyde park, chicago is an amazing place to be right now. people are smiling at strangers on the street. and connecticut pushed back against pressure from the bishop to rewrite the state constitution to ban gay marriage - i don't know why this isn't showing up on the news, but it's true! so as angry as i am about the bigoted bans that passed in several states, i can't help but feel that there is some hope. *\o/*

Did someone actually say this to you or is this about "socialized medicine"? :/

discussions of socialized medicine triggered it today, but my life is full of people saying all doctors and wannabe-doctors are basically moneygrubbing whores. i'm not saying all doctors are angels, but they're not all evil, either. if emergency medicine were a volunteer position at every level, i'd still do it, i'd just have to do something else to have the money to pay the rent, but whatever my eating job was, it would never matter to me as much as medicine, and i feel like i'm going to headbutt the next person to tell me i'm lying about that in the solar plexus.

Wow. Well, it's funny, beacuse the "anti-socialized-medicine" people always seem to forget that we already HAVE pockets (experiments?) of socialized health care ALREADY in this country. They're called the health department, free clinics, inner-city sliding-scale hospitals, etc.

I don't have health insurance. I go to the health department here. And I've never met a nicer and competent bunch of people (staff and doctors). I never wait that long either. As a matter of fact my parents wait longer at their physician's office than i do. It's all propoganda for the drug companies.

Yes, but without that money the cost of medical education becomes prohibitive. If doctors' salaries decrease in any measurable way AND there isn't a concomitant reduction in the cost of a medical education, only the wealthy will be able to become doctors. Right now I am paying over $800 per month in student loan repayment and will be for the next 30 years.

i'm not saying doctors shouldn't be paid decently for their expenses. my problem is with people who are telling me that if all doctors were paid a flat rate, all doctors would suck because there would be no incentive to treat the patients well.

Yeah, I hear ya. I just get tired of the attitude that somehow it is degrading or not honorable for a doctor to actually want to make a decent living. I do want to be able to live well on my salary. That's not why I went into medicine (and anyone who goes into it for that reason is stupid because there are far easier ways of just making money), but it is still important. And I don't think acknowledging that fact makes me some sort of ignoble leech.

Rant not at all directed at you and I do agree with your point.

^that's still me
